Just like a coin, feedback also has two sides. The giving side and the receiving side. And both sides face a certain degree of difficulty. The giver doesn’t want to risk causing a conflict or hurting someone’s feelings. The receiver may start to think that they are not as perfect as they thought.?
Truly enough, giving genuine constructive feedback is often construed to be difficult by professionals.??
But it doesn’t always have to be that way. You can change the way you feel about constructive feedback by changing the way you perceive it.
Firstly, you need to realise that feedback is a gift that you give others to let them know how they are doing. All the feelings set aside, the net result of constructive feedback is improved performance.
Secondly, you need to have the right mindset while giving feedback. Ask yourself what’s your intent behind giving the feedback. Is it to help them and build trust with them? If yes, then you are on the right path!
Lastly, remove emotion from the scenario and remain objective while giving feedback. Refrain from saying anything personal or judgemental and focus on describing the specific point you are making in as much detail as you can.
Providing constructive feedback might make you feel uncomfortable. It may seem like a bitter pill to swallow. But the best thing you can do is embrace the discomfort and do it anyway.
