Meaningful Volunteer Engagement Using the CCVI Guidelines?

The Canadian Code for Volunteer Involvement (CCVI) was developed by Volunteer Canada, and is intended to provide guidance and resources for organizations that enlist the support of volunteers. It outlines ten standards that organizations can adopt, demonstrating their commitment to engaging and supporting volunteers in a meaningful and responsible way.?

Putting the Code into Action is a resource that was developed in accordance with the CCVI, and is a practical guide to assist organizations in implementing the standards of practice that are outlined in the CCVI. Some may find that not all of the steps are practical for their organization, or that they already have policies and practices in place in support of the standards set forth in the CCVI, but this resource can certainly be of value to many.?

Valuing Volunteer Involvement

In preparing for National Volunteer Week celebrations, we’d like to highlight Standard 10 of the CCVI – Recognition: Valuing Volunteer Involvement. This standard states:?

  • The organization acknowledges the contribution of volunteers, using a range of tools and activities that reflect the needs of the volunteer. The value and impact of volunteer contributions are understood and acknowledged within the organization and communicated to the volunteer.

Some examples of this include:?

  • The contributions of volunteers are regularly acknowledged, both formally and informally?
  • Management acknowledges the involvement and impact of volunteers?
  • The organization communicates the value and impact of volunteer contributions?
  • A variety of recognition tools are offered, according to the needs of the volunteer?
  • The organization identifies how volunteers want to be recognized by learning about their motivations and interests?
  • Recognition is appropriate to the volunteer role and respects the volunteer’s wishes.?
