Have you ever thought expectations were too high?
Have you ever been in a situation where expectations were set by others who had no real knowledge or experience in the role or project?
Have you ever tried to meet what you felt were unreasonable expectations?
How did you feel in these situations?? Were you able to take action and do your best work?
Success criteria, expectations, outcomes, deliverables – No matter what you call them there are some truths about them.
They need to be simple and clear.
They need to be aligned.
They need to change as a role or project changes.
They need to be communicated and re-communicated.
What do you do to clarify expectations?? What do you do to re-set expectations?
An executive I am working with said they were expected to do “all the things.”
I cannot do all the things.? Can you?
Doing everything is not sustainable.? No one can do all the things…
What can you do?? Develop success criteria that are easily understood and measured.? Involve the project team, board and other partners in an alignment conversation around them.? Keep the conversation going as you progress because things change…? and you can’t do all the things.

All expectations should be set, reviewed and reset until the associated task(s) are achieved. That is the only way to be successful.
