All in on Rust!

All in on Rust!

As I am from a generation that started coding on any machines we could get our hands on, the birth of GCC was the big change. With GCC coding became available, we shared it over dial-up Bulletin boards and it spread like wildfire. It is the reason the open source projects like Linux could grow so fast. Finally we had a tool that did not cost a fortune and was accessible to all.

Fantastic.

But then nothing much happened at all, new Interpreting languages where developed like Java and Python and the web brought stuff like PHP and JavaScript. No new exciting, close to metal stuff, just high level inefficient solutions that burnt CPU cycles like there is no tomorrow, and hardware manufacturers have had golden days (still have).

But energy matters, the environment matters so bad solutions that is wasteful matters, we need to start optimization towards sustainable computing solutions. We the code monkeys need to be in the forefront of this, but there was no language or compiler that fit, until now!

The Rust language and compiler has brought us the possibility to create and deploy systems that are environmentally responsible.

Rust is as efficient as C code but as easy as Python or Java to code, look in to it, it is worth it.

Rust is the future, no question about it, and we all need to start thinking sustainable.

Have you evaluated Julia for Smart City Computer scenarios? In my opinion, Rust/Golang/C/C++ is no principial solution to that Green Computing topic. Ability to model and "print" custom processors for various focused purposes would allow achieving more in this area. There was that publication about Polymer transistors... Not everywhere you need OS + fast processor. For more serious cases, custom silicon processors could be modeled. 1% gain is no salvation. We need to change paradigms and everything radically to get radically better results.

I'm all in on Rust. No need to convince me ??
