Sometimes, I feel a little bit like Eric Morecambe and André Previn when it comes to marketing …

If you knew how to create a team confidently, what would that be worth to you?
If you are building and scaling a business, you must have a team to help you. It's suicidal trying to do it on your own. Let me illustrate.
Think about four numbers. A thousand. A million. A billion. A trillion. Can you get to grips with what each of those numbers represents?
?1,000; 1,000,000; 1,000,000,000; 1,000,000,000,000; for some of us, it all gets a bit dizzying.
Close your eyes and attempt to visualise a thousand, a million, a billion, a trillion; most people start to get overawed after a million. It's a bit like listening to Prof. Brian Cox describing the vastness and awe of the cosmos. Big numbers simply baffle us unless we can construct visual metaphors.
Let's take a walk on a beach. It's a big one with miles of sand stretching out into the distance. Let's assume all the sand particles are the same size. The granules are exactly one millimetre across and perfectly spherical.
To imagine a thousand grains of sand, all we need to do is draw a circle in the sand with a diameter of 36mm; a million requires a diameter of 1.13 metres, a billion is 36m across, and a trillion would require a diameter of just over one kilometre. Most people can imagine that, but they get a bit daunted around step 3, from one billion to one trillion.
Let's look at it another way and turn it from a two-dimensional model into a three-dimensional one. Instead of circles in our mind's eye, let's see spheres.
To imagine a thousand grains of sand, we only have to imagine a sphere of sand with a diameter of 12mm; a million requires a diameter of 12cm, a billion, 1.2m and a trillion 12m.
I'd imagine you can get your head around this. It's simply a case of envisaging an ever-growing sphere with a growing volume and capacity.
That is what bigger businesses are all about: growing the capacity, doing more, earning more, being more helpful.
A VISUAL ANALOGY
If you don't like numbers, let's look at them another way.
Imagine the following:
1.????????????? A young boy is playing with a marble.
2.????????????? A young woman rolling a lawn bowls ball.
3.????????????? A child relaxing into a great big yoga ball.
4.????????????? A crowd grappling with a ball as big as a four-storey townhouse.
1.??? The marble represents a small hobby business turning over thousands.
2.??? The bowls ball represents a professional business that has taken a few hard knocks, requires a lot of energy and turns over a million plus.

3.??? The yoga ball represents mass, structure and support and is heading for the billion.
4.??? The ball as big as a house represents companies taking on the world and heading for that magic trillion.
A TIME ANALOGY
How long would it take you to place one grain of sand per second to fill the above four volumes? How long would it take you to count out one-dollar bills at one per second?
1.????????????? One thousand would take you 17 minutes.
2.????????????? One million would take 12 solid days.
3.????????????? One billion? 32 years.
4.????????????? One trillion? 32 millennia
You could imagine yourself, with some determination and patience, doing the first two, but the third and fourth steps? You can't do it alone unless you're ready for an eternity of boredom and slog. You'll need:
1.????????????? A team
2.????????????? Leverage through exponential/geometric growth
3.????????????? Compounding interest
4.????????????? Momentum
5.????????????? Tools and automation
If you want to get to the more significant numbers, the bigger rewards, you will not be able to do it alone. You require a team; otherwise, you will be like 'Sisyphus' perpetually pushing the boulder up the hill for all eternity, or 'Sisyphus' sister' picking up grains of sand one grain at a time.
What size of ball do you want to play with?
I imagine you'd want to play with more than a marble. You'd like to play with a tennis ball, or at least a football. So, not step 1, but definitely step 2, perhaps, one day, heading for 3 and 4 - which would be the dream. The football is (conceptually) step 2 on the way to step 3 and heading for mass. Security and support are heading for the yoga ball.

*Step changes are when businesses add a zero. They step up from the 10s of thousands in annual turnover to the 100s of thousands to the millions to the 10s of millions, etc. It's like being promoted (stepping up) to a higher sporting league, and everything changes—the expectations, the aspirations, the talent, the skillsets, the infrastructure, the costs. Most business owners are unaware of the structural changes necessary to make the transition smoothly.
