Paul and his friends joined the army to demonstrate their patriotism, yet soon found themselves desolate as they witnessed firsthand the horrors of battle.
1. The Front is a cage in which we must await fearfully whatever may happen.
The Western Front, stretching from Switzerland to the North Sea, was a key battle zone during World War I. Although several conflicts took place here over its course, none quite matched up to France and Germany's engagement.
In 1915, German and French forces attempted to flank one another on the fringes of northern France. Unfortunately, these efforts proved ineffective as both forces remained in contact throughout the remainder of the conflict. Ultimately, they converged at the North Sea, creating what would later become known as "The Western Front."
Throughout the war, soldiers faced death on a daily basis and suffered from shell shock - an illness that caused physical symptoms like depression, headaches and insomnia due to exposure to high levels of gunfire, sniper fire and poisonous gas.
This was the constant, heart-wrenching reality that rocked the world. Despite all efforts, the Western Front proved to be one of the bloodiest, most brutal World Wars ever fought.
Edward Berger's All Quiet on the Western Front is an intense and visually captivating version of Erich Maria Remarque's classic novel Im Westen nichts Neues, making it the first German adaptation and carrying a strong anti-war message.
Paul Baumer is drawn into joining the German army by the promise of heroism. He quickly becomes enraptured in a war full of excitement and patriotic fervor; however, when they reach their front line they discover the horror that is World War I.
They are cast into a maelstrom of violence, fear and death from which they cannot escape. In many ways, The Front serves as a metaphor for all of human history.
In today's age of fear and uncertainty, we must remain alert and ready to act when necessary. But to become a successful soldier, you first must learn how to survive in battle - this takes practice and skill. In the end, it is usually courage that wins out in these difficult situations.
2. We have become wild beasts.
Sometimes the best way to protect yourself from wild beasts is simply not getting near them at all. Indeed, many wildlife experts advise keeping a distance at all times.
Although animals can be aggressive when feeling threatened, most wild animal attacks occur without provocation. Knowing how wild animals behave and being aware of their habits will greatly enhance your safety when dealing with wild creatures.
One of the best ways to avoid getting eaten by a bear is by paying close attention to its body language and being alert. This includes not only watching its mouth but also noting when it changes its posture or how it moves around.

Signs of an injured animal, such as slow movements and reluctance to eat or move, can be easily identified. The best course of action when encountering such an animal is to keep your distance and do your best to assist it in recovering.
Another thing to bear in mind is that not all wild animals are alike. Generally speaking, larger predators will have greater fear of humans than smaller ones, particularly in areas with less natural vegetation or where depopulation has led to an increase in animal sightings.
It is essential to remember that even small wild animals can be deadly. Therefore, being cautious should always be your top priority for keeping yourself and those you care about safe. This can be achieved through education, common sense, and vigilance. While it may seem obvious at first glance, a bear eating your leg is certainly a frightening thought!
3. We are animals in a cage.
Erich Maria Remarque's novel All Quiet on the Western Front explores the psychological toll war takes on young men who serve in it. It sends a powerful message about its senselessness and futility as well as its long-lasting consequences on humanity.
Paul begins the novel recalling how his friends and him had enlisted to prove their patriotism. But as time on the front passed, they lost their passion for their country and started losing their morals; becoming more violent than those within their own families despite having dedicated themselves to this cause.
Remarque makes this point by referring to men as animals in a cage of war. He also states that when one is on the front line, one's animal instincts awaken and the earth takes on new significance - for instance, burying one's body in the ground for it to become one with nature.
Remarque's description of soldiers as animals in cages speaks to how they are treated at war - they aren't allowed freedom and must live like them due to legal constraints. It is interesting that Remarque would refer to these men as "animals in chains", because that is exactly how they feel.
He applies this quote not only to how people treat animals at the Front, but it is also applicable to his own life. Growing up in poverty and being abused by his mother led him into foster care where he had many other brothers to look up to.
He is a lawyer, representing humans but also fighting for animal rights. His goal is to change the law so that animals have personhood - an idea inspired by Australian philosopher Peter Singer's animal liberation philosophy.
Wise began his legal career representing humans, but soon realized the need for animal advocacy as well. He has become an outspoken supporter of animal rights and was featured in the documentary "Unlocking the Cage," which chronicles his journey to transform laws around the world.
4. We are one with the earth.
