It Is All About People

If I had £1 for the amount of times I heard this phrase, either from leaders or business coaches, I’d definitely not have to work as much!
But Lee, “you say it”, I hear you cry.
And, this is true, I do and have said it. In fact one of the core statements we use at ‘Get Knowledge ’ is that we champion people in the improvement equation.
It is a statement that is a lot easier to say than do, but telling someone it is all about the people without helping them understand what it actually means is like telling a child they just need to match all the colours on a Rubix cube and leaving them to figure it out themselves.
Some will manage it, some will give up, some will do some things right and others not.
At the end of my podcast ‘Business Problems Solved’ the outro says, “and remember saying you know how to do it, is not doing it” and just like that sentence I believe everyone says they know its all about people, but very few are actually doing it.
That’s the difference, we have to demonstrate it is about each person, not just say it.
If our actions, if our behaviours and if the things we say in each interaction don’t demonstrate we are people centric then, it is meaningless and we are trusted less.
We are part of the problem!
?
So what can we do…
‘People’ is often the common term used for a collective group of individuals, so this requires us to understand and tailor our approach to each person, or to at least let each person see and feel that we ‘care’ in everything we say and do.
We need to remember that:
·?????? Every person is different
·?????? Everyone’s experience or experiences have been different
This is what makes ‘people’ so beautiful.
Every day is different for everyone because they will constantly be thinking things about what their current senses are feeding them, or what their past experiences are making them think and feel.
This is also how you work, reading this now, my words will be making you think or feel things or you may be picturing a ‘Pink Elephant’, because I have said pink elephant.
This is what you need to remember, your words, your actions, the environments you create, and the impressions you leave on people will be influencing thoughts.
Maya Angelou is famously quoted as saying, “People will forget what you said, forget what you did but never forget how you made them feel”.
So, when I say its all about people, fundamentally, it is all about how you make each person feel whatever it is you are doing, this could be a change initiative or being part of a team or just a one off interaction.
You are always leaving footprints everywhere you go, how much of a footprint is determined by the feelings you create in others, positively or negatively.

Some small things that could leave a large footprint are:
·?????? Genuinely smiling and making eye contact with someone
·?????? Asking a second question, using the answer they have given as the basis for the question
·?????? Asking people for their thoughts, ideas and opinions instead of just telling them
·?????? Picking up the phone or going to see someone, instead of a short text or email
It is all about people, really requires you to genuinely take an interest in others.
Can you leave your ego at the door long enough to demonstrate to your team that it is REALLY all about people for YOU!
