Hello there!
?
Welcome back to my weekly newsletter on Smart Parenting...In a new avatar!
?
Do you ever wonder why your child does not listen to you?
?
You are giving them access to countless years of wisdom, all of it processed and distilled into the best form of guidance possible, and for free!
?
And yet, they don’t want it. Why?
?
Is there something wrong with what you are saying? Or do you need a different approach?
?
I used to wonder the same thing. I used to tell my kids to read more books to improve their vocabulary, to watch better things on Netflix instead of the mindless action and drama, and to eat more healthy food because they were getting overly fond of McDonald’s and Dunkin Donuts.
?
And yet, they were taking none of it. Were they not afraid of the future at all?
?
But I slowly began to understand why. I was asking them to change their mindset and their habits but they were not convinced because I was not doing any of it myself!
?
Would you take martial arts training from somebody who has never tried it? Or take art lessons from somebody who has never picked up a brush?
?
Never! Right?
?
My children were not going to take any advice if they never saw me apply any of it.
?
So I changed. Not drastically but I started following my own advice. I gave up my guilty pleasure of watching South Indian movies every night and restricted myself to watching it only on the weekends. I read more and cut down my sweet tooth addiction to Rasmalai mithai...
?
And after a few weeks....magic! My son started picking up an apple every other day after breakfast and my daughter is taking some time out from watching Money Heist read. It’s not much but at least it’s a start!
?
And that’s the most important part, something that we as parents often forget.
?
Kids don’t learn by listening to what we say. They learn by watching what we do. Those in turn determine who they grow up to be as a person.
?
That is what being a Smart Parent is all about.

Indulge in hobbies
Today kids have a range of options to make careers out of, of which even half were not available in our time.
?
The world is calling out to us to come to explore its new opportunities and it will not do for us to keep pushing studies as the only option for our kids. When they are young and curious, we should let them explore and indulge as much as they want in different activities.
?
This will help them discover the areas in which they are truly interested.
I have seen many parents start early with their kids; going to piano classes, martial arts classes, coaching for sports, music, and much more. I have a friend whose son is a freelance mural artist, one who is pursuing a training program for a Formula1 team, and another who is an MMA fighter in Thailand. The sheer numbers of options today are enormous!
The children become excited, focused, and happier when they are encouraged to pursue their passion.
?So, what’s your way to uplifting the passion in your kids?
?Pro- Tip? The world is a big place and your kid has thousands of choices in terms of a career. So let them explore and explore with them. ?
