[Toronto, Ontario] — Have you ever looked at a pack of granola at the grocery store and wondered what the labels on the front meant? Especially when you see labels that say All-Natural or 100% Natural, and Organic. One may think that the terms Natural and Organic are interchangeable, but there are fundamental differences between the two terms.?

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Natural foods are foods that do not use any artificial substances/ingredients in the production of the product. And while this means that the items consumed in food products are all-natural, the production methods for these ingredients can still include utilizing pesticides, thermal technologies, pasteurization, and irradiation. Additionally, the term natural does not necessarily define any nutritional benefits.?Learn more

?Organic foods, however, have a slightly different checklist used to determine whether it is organic or not. With regards to individual ingredients, they must be grown on soil with no synthetic fertilizers and pesticides applied for at least three years before harvesting. When it comes to processed foods no artificial preservatives, colors or flavors can be used, and the ingredients must be organic. Typically, organic food producers will be using the most natural substances and physical, mechanical, or biologically based farming methods as much as they possibly can. Learn more

In Canada, similar to the USDA organic standard, corporations use the certified organic label to show that they meet the standard to receive the label. To meet this standard 95%, or more, of the ingredients used in the food item must be organic. Only then can a company use the certified organic label on their food packages.?

Something for customers to keep in mind when buying packaged foods is to look out for the certified organic label. It is easy for corporations to claim that their product is organic when they use ingredients like organic strawberries or organic oats. However, only those packages with the Certified Organic label can guarantee that what you are consuming can confidently rule out the use of synthetic chemicals and GMOs.?Learn more
