Not all memory loss leads to Dementia.

Not all memory loss leads to Dementia.

I've got some great news for you, brain bosses...

Not all memory loss leads to Dementia!

Yes, as our body ages, our brain ages as well. Our brain functions at its peak in our 20s in terms of its speed and memory function. Beyond 30 years old, we slowly feel the speed or memory deteriorating; not with a significant difference, but just slightly and subtly.

Some of us may fear these poor memories being signs or symptoms of Dementia or other cognitive issues. Hold your horses! Some of us may have worried too early or unnecessarily.

Memory deterioration could suffice due to a few lifestyle influences and factors. Some of these include :

  • Medicines. Certain medicines or combinations of medicines can cause forgetfulness or confusion. Check with your physicians or specialists for any possible side effects of your medicines.
  • A minor head injury. A head injury from a fall or an accident — even if you don't lose consciousness — can cause memory issues. (I will share more about this during the preview on 4th Sept).
  • Emotional conditions. Stress, anxiety, or depression can cause forgetfulness, confusion, difficulty concentrating, and other symptoms that disrupt daily activities.
  • Alcohol use disorder. Alcohol use disorder can seriously impair mental ability. Alcohol also can cause memory loss by interacting with medicines.
  • Too little vitamin B-12 in the body. Vitamin B-12 helps maintain healthy nerve cells and red blood cells. Not enough vitamin B-12 especially common in older adults can affect memory.
  • Hypothyroidism. An underactive thyroid gland, known as hypothyroidism, can result in forgetfulness and other symptoms related to thinking.
  • Sleep apnea. Sleep apnea that is not treated can affect memory. Insufficient or disturbed sleep will negatively affect our cognitive and memory functions.

When is memory loss a cause for concern, then?

When one exhibits signs of inability to live independently. If someone can no longer do their shopping or cooking, reading (to some) or remember to take their medications, that's concerning and beyond the expectation for normal aging.

Then you might want to seek your physician's advise. During your visit at the physician's clinic, he / she will run several tests to further determine or rule out other causes of memory loss. These evaluations should result in a diagnosis. When the diagnosis is unclear your doctor may refer you to a neurologist or cognitive specialist for further testing and for care after / treatment after the diagnosis.

Having said that, please Don't leave our memory to chance! ??

Hahaha, my mum for many years had perfect memory, and only starting last year she had instances where she "forgot" a few things such as her car keys, and she gets so worried that she is getting Dementia.. but I assured her that, she is just finally letting go of all the stress she has hold up for years ?? Relax! Your mind is alright, I can't even remember as many things as her ??

There's a saying that Einstein, even at his great intellect, used lesser than 10% of his brain. Does that mean we have lots of brain to go around...? ??
