All for Love: The Story of the Cartier Love Collection

The story of Cartier Love dates back to 1969, a time when the world was swept up in a wave of freedom and spontaneity. It was then that Cartier decided to create a piece of jewelry that would embody the spirit of the era.

The concept for Cartier Love was born from the vision of French designer Aldo Cipullo, who sought to create something unique and symbolic

Inspired by the idea of a "chastity belt" and the aesthetic of eternal love, he designed a bracelet that would become not just a fashionable accessory, but a true symbol of unbreakable bonds and deep affection. Cipullo crafted the bracelet from two halves that are connected by a special screw. To put it on or take it off, a unique screwdriver is required, which is kept by only one person in the pair. This represents the inseparable connection and mutual dependence between two people.

The history of Cartier Love bracelets is surrounded by legends

According to one myth, they were originally available only to couples in love, who had to exchange the “keys” to their bracelets (the screwdrivers!). When Cartier first introduced the bracelet to the public, the romantic symbolism was cemented with a symbolic gesture. The first pieces were given to celebrity couples like Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, or Ali MacGraw and Steve McQueen. As Vogue magazine reported, some New York hospitals even kept a Cartier Love screwdriver on hand in case a patient urgently needed to remove the bracelet—another playful legend.

Cartier Love quickly gained popularity among celebrities and the wealthy, becoming synonymous with status, prestige, and the embodiment of eternal love. Many couples chose Cartier Love as a symbol of their relationship, fastening it on their partner’s wrist and never taking it off.

“Love today often becomes a commercial enterprise, but life without love is nothing. Modern people need symbols of love that appear permanent, or at least are not easily removed. After all, a symbol of love should have lasting value,” – Aldo Cipullo, Cartier jewelry designer.
