To all the juniors out there!
A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor!

To all the juniors out there!

Not in favour of generalizations but I have noticed a big difference between you and I.?

A lot of you (of course not all) are in such a hurry to get the “senior” in front of your titles. After only a few years you believe that you know it all. You want to play in La Liga after a few games. Some of you succeed but the rest of us (I include myself here even if I am not that young anymore) we need to practice, we need time!?

In my home country, Spain, we have a saying “more knows the devil?for being?old than?for being?the devil”. Seniority takes time, myself even after 11 years as a leader, I'm still learning new things and sometimes I don’t feel that senior.?

  • Don’t be in such a hurry!

Another factor that gives you seniority is your failures. You fail, you learn, you grow! I remember in a former job; I was surprised that my new team of data scientists never did mistakes. I confronted them, either you are all geniuses or you are all playing safe. They were playing safe because experts don’t do mistakes.

  • Don’t be afraid to do mistakes!?

Another thing that I have noticed (again this is my experience and of course there are exceptions) when the work gets tough or boring, It is so easy to just move on and change projects, tasks or employer. You will say something like, “this is not fun anymore and I want to do something else now” ..but a smooth sea never made a skilled sailor!?

It is important in order to become a great professional that you learn to overcome difficulties. Don’t forget that you are not a lonely island. Ask for help from seniors, we love to share our wisdom.?

  • Don’t give up too soon and ask for help!

Mistakes, challenges and time will make you wiser and you will be able to carry your senior title (when you get it) with pride!!!!

So well articulated. Playing safe is falling into comfort zone, but it is discomfort and zeal to convert it into comfort sharpens one more. Thanks Dacil.

Nice note Dacil Hernandez, I like the way you put it - "You fail, you learn, you grow!" I think maturity does not come with the number of years it comes with how much you accepted and acknowledged your failures and learnt from it. Some people learn from their mistakes faster other don't want to learn even after multiple years :)
