All about growing our own

When you work at the Office for National Statistics, career development and training are part of how we operate. Our Professional Development teams and Learning Academy support colleagues across the business to progress their skills and career journeys.

Sometimes though we get opportunities to really grow our own, to nurture talent at an early stage and support their development. Whether that's a multi year placement programme that offers you part time work whilst you study and a graduate job offer, or training to complete a diploma or apprenticeship as part of your role.

I was lucky enough to have an opportunity last year to work in our Digital Services team, and to be involved in designing, building, and running our brand new combined placement and graduate programme for Software Engineering.

Software Engineer Year-in-Industry and Grad programme

The programme is recruiting for its 2nd intake of year-in-industry students now, and we hope to grow on last years numbers.

Growing on the success of last years programme for software engineers, we have now taken the decision to expand the programme, and for 2022 will be offering a Data Engineer programme, following the same format of placement year in industry, part time job whilst studying, and then graduate role.

Recruiting for our first intake this autumn, applications are open now for students looking for a placement starting in September 2022.
