All that is gold does not glitter. As a Digital Marketing Specialist i have learnt that not everything that is shiny and superficially attractive is valuable. Not everything that is misplaced is lost. Sometimes good things come hidden as #hardwork. Just because something looks attractive does not mean it is genuine or valuable. The attractive external appearance of something is not a reliable indication of its true nature. Don’t imagine that because they are rich, they are happy. #William Shakespeare is popular for using this phrase in his play, The Merchant of Venice. The original version reads, “…all that glisters is not gold.“ Glitter is a metaphor for things having shiny appearances, and gold for the worth or value of persons or things.
In The Lord of Rings the poem is heard about three times:
All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes, a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.
Do not judge anything by mere appearance but by its true nature within. Lines three and four emphasize the endurance of Aragorns' royal lineage, while five and six emphasizes its renewal. They can also be seen to represent a spark of hope during a time of despair and danger.
