The term ‘GitOps’ was coined by Weaveworks’ Alexis Richardson in 2017.
According to the statement of Alexis, “One of the most important functions of GitOps is to enable a group of system changes to be applied correctly and then?verified,”
After that, GitOps should enable the users and orchestrators to be notified (alerted) if any of the systems has drifted from the correct state so that it may then be converged back to the correct desired state (which is in Git). So in GitOps, we MUST use continuous observation and verification, to enable app & cluster management.”
So Is GitOps another tool?
GitOps doesn’t require developers to learn another shiny new tool; it uses git extensively, and developers are already experts in using it. Git and its robust ecosystem of extensions offer developers a more efficient way to manage their code. The changes made will be seen with a simple pull/sync. GitOps makes configuration management and software deployments easier; this is what developers like to do instead of tedious hardcoded configurations and scripting.

As the concept of GitOps is becoming popular, we decided to bring in a LinkedLive event on 20th October, 9 PM IST with Leonardo Murillo
In this talk we will give you a guided tour through GitOps, from basic concepts to actionable understanding of how this operating model came to exist, what differentiates it from prior patterns, and how it can be used to solve real problems in the rapidly changing world of cloud native deployments at scale.
Leo's career spans over 20 years of evolving technology, from software development and IT operations in the 90s to leading teams building cloud native technology across the world for companies of all sizes, from Silicon Valley startups to Fortune 500s today.
