On Monday, May 27th the United States will observe Memorial Day. A holiday that has been continuously on the Federal calendar since 1868. For some it's the official beginning of Summer, a day marked by hot dogs, beer and flying Old Glory. For others it's a more solemn affair, the opportunity to remember and honor those who gave their lives for our country. Where ever you fall in the spectrum, if you're an American, it's a day that should evoke some level of patriotism, the good kind.
There is an opportunity that exists for all of us to do something that will do a lot of good, cost a little money and remember in a tangible way those who gave their lives in the service of our country. And most importantly there is an outcome outside of ourselves, it will give hope to those who actively serve us.
The organization, Stars for our Troops, collects used American flags. Flags that were made in the United States and have embroidered stars. They cut the stars out of the field of blue and send them to active duty troops. The message they send reads:
"I am part of our American flag that has flown over the USA. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that, You are not forgotten.”
Imagine a part of your old flag being carried by a member of our armed forces as they are actively protecting your freedom.
Having recently purchased a new flag and I wondered what should I do with the old ones I've retired. That is how I found this honorable organization. If you have an old flag that you'd like to retire and want to make a difference, please consider sending it to:
Stars for our Troops, Inc. 2 116th Street, Unit 301, Troy, NY 12182-0301
Happy Memorial Day, albeit a few days early.
