All the data you can eat. What happens then?

Most of you will already be familiar with the Edge – it’s not a new concept. In fact, 69% of Fortune 10 companies already use Dell Technologies for their Edge Computing Solutions.[1]
One of the biggest advantages at the Edge – and why it’s growing in popularity – is that it’s possible for data to be acted on close to the source. There is no wait time. Data can be processed and put to work faster than ever, generating almost immediate value for businesses. It’s no surprise then that more than 50% of new IT infrastructure will be deployed at the Edge by 2023.
If, like most organizations, your customers feast on data, here’s why the Edge should be a top priority…
What’s driving the data explosion?
Data is like sugar and most organizations have a sweet tooth. But one big problem: many businesses currently are in denial about data. They may crave it; they might have an insatiable appetite for it. But many of these companies – 70% in fact – can’t handle the data they already have. How can they welcome more?
In addition to that longing for more, there are several other factors driving the data explosion. Let’s look at the on-demand economy. The need for immediate results has created further obstacles, with new data types emerging and spreading across new locations, including outside the data center. Currently, around 10% of enterprise-generated data is created and processed outside a traditional centralized data center or cloud.?By 2025, Gartner predicts this figure will reach 75%, creating even more variables.
Add to that the skills gap of 2021-22 which has so far resulted in 61% of companies lacking the talent to manage their technical infrastructures.
And finally, not having the right people is one thing. Having inadequate IT which wasn’t designed for this data-centric world is another.
So, what does all of this tell us?

The push to load up a plate with all-you-can-eat data, the move outside the safe walls of the data center and a data science skills gap leave us wanting more data, without the means to get value from it. All of this combined with the onset of new tech like 5G, means that businesses are at risk of data overload and costly cyber-attacks.
