Not all Brands are Created Equal

As I explained the difference of personal branding and traditional branding to my newest client I realized that it would benefit my audience greatly if I expanded on this topic in an article.

About 3 years ago I was looking over images and fonts from a marketing assistant that was assisting me with re-branding my website and online marketing.

I started to feel offended as I looked at one image after another that didn’t seem to feel like me at all. No matter how hard I tried, she kept missing the mark. 

Either I wasn’t communicating well with what I wanted or she was limited on resources to create what I was suggesting.

Either way, I thought to myself, why am I taking this so personally? Then I reminded myself that this IS personal, it’s my PERSONAL BRAND.

The major difference between Traditional Branding and Personal Branding is that it really is personal.

A traditional business brand will pick fonts and colors that may reflect what they are selling. When you are a brick and mortar business or corporation, there isn’t much room for personal opinion.

You want your logo and brand to be attractive to your everyday buyer.  It needs to be simple and effective so your customer clicks the ‘buy now’ button and goes on with their day.

Most likely with this type of traditional branding, your customer will never meet the owner.  Nor do they usually care who the owner is. 

They see your product and it meets a need, and the transaction is complete.

Now, with personal branding, we have a few more obstacles to overcome before anyone buys. For example, you are selling YOU first in most cases. 

Perhaps you are an author, a coach, a public speaker or consultant and you want people to get to the “know, like and trust factor” quickly.
