All About Back and Neck Injuries from Rear-End Collisions

Many people who have been involved in rear-end collisions experience a back and neck injury as a result of the car accident. Injuries to the neck after a car crash are often generalized as whiplash injuries. These types of injuries are considered soft tissue neck injuries, which can occur when the head is jerked backward during the impact of a car accident.

What Happens To Your Neck During Impact from Behind

What happens in some cases, is that in the rear of a collision the first car is struck by another car from behind. The driver of the first car is pushed suddenly forward by the back of the seat, and the head lags behind because of no inertia forces (the person was sitting still before the crash). Next, the person in the first car’s head is forced forward, then suddenly jerked backward on a rebound. And this motion can be followed by being jerked forward to hit the steering wheel or even the side door during the crash.

If No Seat Belt Is Worn, Injuries Will Be Greater

This is assuming that the person in the first car is wearing a seatbelt. Without the seat belt harness to stop the force of an impact, the person in the first car will sustain even more serious soft tissue injuries – as well as other injuries. If a person is not wearing a seat belt and is hit from behind in a sudden rear-end collision, that person in the first car can even be thrown out of the vehicle through the windshield or forced out of a side window all on the impact of the car that hits the first car from behind.

A Neck Injury Often Creates Accompanying Back Injuries

Most people don’t realize that basic anatomy lesson, that the neck is directly connected to the back. Many times, if a person experiences a soft tissue injury to the neck, it is quite common to also have an injury to the back as well. If the person who is hit from behind in a rear-end collision suffers a neck injury, the person’s back is usually going to be affected too.

Lower Back Pain and Recovery Times

Lower back pain and sprains are quite common as a result of a car accident. It can take many weeks or months to recover from lower back pain after a crash with another automobile.

What Types of Back Injuries Will Result After a Rear-End Collision?

There is a high chance that a person who has been in a rear-end collision might also aggravate a pre-existing back injury. As with some of these other back injuries, there can be a primary or associated back problem that is triggered and can be associated with rear-end car accidents, such as:

  • Coccyx injuries
  • Back spasms
  • Lumbar vertebrae injuries
  • Osteoarthritis of the spine
  • Piriformis muscle syndrome
  • Polyradiculopathy
  • Intervertebral disk degeneration
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Sciatica
  • Lumbosacral region injuries
  • Synovial cyst
