The fact that carbon zinc batteries die slowly gives them the edge over alkaline batteries in one very particular use case: smoke detectors. All the smoke detectors I ever saw _require_ carbon zinc batteries explicitly .The issue is that even though Alkaline battery maintains energy levels longer, once it starts dying it drops dead really fast. Meanwhile smoke detectors want to warn you about the dying battery with a loud beep sound, every 20 seconds or so. And it is supposed to last at least a few days. With alkaline the warning period will be very short, or there won't be any at all. Note, that smoke detectors are also connected to AC power, and the battery is just a backup source of energy. But regardless if AC power is present all smoke detectors will complain loudly when battery is about to die
