Alignment of Goals and Prioritization Methods

In my previous article,?Essential Prioritization Methods in Product Management, I tried to briefly explain some basic prioritization methods. But without a clear vision, goal, or goal alignment, it’s hard to say that our prioritization approaches are entirely correct.

To properly prioritize any initiative, it’s important to keep the goals of your company in mind. This means that when deciding which initiatives to focus on, you need to consider how they align with your overall goals and objectives.

Similar to the fact that the regulations depend on the basis of the laws, then the laws are on the basis of the constitution; we need to base our initiatives on company goals and our goals on the company’s vision.

Let’s say the logistics company, named “FastTrack Logistics”, specializes in providing reliable and efficient delivery services to businesses across various industries. With the rising demand for faster and more seamless logistics services, the company has identified the need to upgrade its operations to stay competitive.

To achieve this, FastTrack Logistics plans to develop a comprehensive digital platform that streamlines its logistics operations and enhances its customer experience. The company aims to develop a web-based platform that enables clients to manage their orders and shipments seamlessly.

Starting this journey, they have three major company goals in mind to reach their vision:

Increase customer satisfaction:?FastTrack Logistics aims to provide exceptional customer service and exceed customer expectations in all aspects of its operations, from shipment tracking to delivery times.

Enhance operational efficiency:?The company aims to optimize its logistics operations to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and increase profitability. This includes streamlining delivery routes, automating inventory management, and implementing quality control measures to minimize errors and delays.

Promote sustainability:?FastTrack Logistics is committed to promoting eco-friendliness and reducing its carbon footprint in all aspects of its operations. The company will aim to implement sustainable practices in its logistics operations, such as using eco-friendly vehicles and recycling programs, to minimize its impact on the environment.

Then, the product team would consider many stakeholder ideas, consumer feedback, technical development, etc., with these goals in mind and collects a product backlog:

To put it briefly, every product backlog item should be in line with a corresponding company goal. Additionally, it is possible to break down each goal into specific objectives for individual teams within the organization, if desired.

Aligned Goals and Product Backlog

After completing the alignment of our initiatives, we are now at the stage where we can prioritize them in a way that suits our objectives best. We can choose any appropriate approach and decide which goal should be given the highest priority.

This means we have the flexibility to decide which initiative we want to work on first, depending on our needs and preferences. Even, you can track these goals with the corresponding objectives and key results periodically, such as every month or quarter.

Since individuals have the ability to adapt, we should concentrate on adjusting our systems rather than expecting individuals to change. Therefore, the emphasis should be on adapting our organization rather than pressuring individuals within to change.

In summary, the success of any product organization hinges on the alignment of goals and initiatives within the product backlog. While the input of individual experience is essential, it should be backed by a clearly defined structure and system that aligns with the organization’s overall objectives.

When team members understand how their tasks fit into the bigger picture, they can work more efficiently to achieve shared goals. With the appropriate support and alignment, organizations can meet their objectives in a timely and effective manner, providing top-notch products and services to their customers. Investing in alignment-supporting systems is vital for organizations to attain long-term success.
