Alignment
David Amerland ????
Latest book: Built To Last - A science-backed formula to help you stay fit and healthy at any age.
Let’s start with two obvious truths: First, no one can really know the internal world of any other person apart from themselves. Second, we all need to work for money.
When you put these two truths together you get the long list of problems that assail all businesses of all types and sizes. We can talk about motivation, teamwork, trust, communication, focus, grit, drive, resilience, self-development, personal growth, culture, leadership and values until we are blue in the face but what we are fundamentally trying to solve is the misalignment that occurs when what is behind our eyes doesn’t quite match what we expect to see in front of them.
The alignment of the interests of a business with the interests of those working in it and the interests of its customers, in theory, shouldn’t be difficult. In practise however we get caught up in other things. We respond emotionally without thinking. We engage in transactional interactions because they allow us to better understand the motivation of others. That better understanding allows us to calculate just how much we can trust them.

Trust is key. Without it no relational exchange can take place. And I have talked about this before in this Newsletter as well as many other places across the web. So, I am not going to go over the same things again and again despite the fact that, really, for something to sink-in that’s exactly what has to happen.
Instead, I will respect both your time and intelligence and highlight instead how by taking a certain amount of trust as a given you can focus on alignment to make sure your business becomes successful.
Just how you truly achieve this alignment is the million-dollar question. But with that as your guiding star every other challenge you face as you make your business grow and thrive will be seen in context which means it will be more manageable and, arguably, a little easier to solve.
That’s it. Short and sweet this week which means it is difficult and complex as a subject to internalize, understand and implement. Just like life.?

2 å¹´Short and sweet indeed David. And I trust you know how much I, and others, appreciate that. Your piece on "Transforming Leadership And Trust" on Tanveer is also a a great read. There's no getting around the four stages.

2 å¹´This is a great complement to Jeff Ikler's latest episode of his podcast, Getting Unstuck! I love it when alignment works across content as well as within an organization. Good stuff as always, David Amerland ????. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/answering-the-other-powerful-question/id1439952788?i=1000589985127

2 å¹´lots to unpack here David. Aligning business interests with employees and customers takes a huge amount of awareness and honesty. The potential rewards are considerable but not easy to win. Far more convenient to construct a reality and constantly look for evidence to reinforce what you'd like to believe.
