Aligning Purpose and Culture for High Performing Women

Aligning Purpose and Culture for High Performing Women

Amid all of the uncertainty and complexity of the past two years, it’s of little surprise that purpose has now emerged as a major weapon in the war for female talent in Australia.

Increasingly, female employees want to know that the hours they spend at work is contributing to something meaningful and, the organisation they are working for is a good corporate citizen. Essentially what they are looking for in purpose is an alignment between personal and organisational values.

The latest Federal election results which saw the defeat of the Morrison Government and the emergence of the “teal” wave of female independents, has demonstrated what can happen when women do not feel an alignment of values and interests.

And it is a pattern of behaviour that is repeating in large organisations around Australia where increasing employees want to see their employer behaving in a pro-social way and the clearest indicator of that is how their organisation treats its people.

According to the 2021 Purpose Premium Survey (Porter Novelli), 82% of employees are willing to leave an organisation that acts in a way that contradicts its publicly stated values and 58% have previously left an organisation because they were unhappy with the impact it was having on society.

Female talent is increasingly looking for evidence of your organisation walking the talk on purpose in its Diversity and Inclusion policies, in how the organisational values align with employee values, the impact your organisation has on the environment and how you engage your employees in work that interests them

When you clearly demonstrate your purpose, your female employees are your biggest advocates, but they are also your biggest brand detractors if they perceive that your statements on purpose are simply nothing more than a window dressing exercise.
