Align Purpose with Passions

We've previously explored how to create business and personal alignment as separate activities. But what happens when we bring these two powerful forces together? This week, we explore the McKinsey 5P framework—an approach to aligning personal passions with your business’s purpose.


Purpose defines a company’s core reason for being and its positive impact on the world. I include Mission, Vision, and Values as creating a business's Positioning that defines purpose.

Businesses with a genuine, lived purpose create alignment between what they do and the passions of people who work with them. They radiate authenticity, achieve more and see higher employee engagement. This translates into competitive advantage.

This McKinsey article introduces the 5Ps framework to create this alignment:

5Ps framework includes:

  1. Products and Services: Ensures the portfolio and offerings align with the business's purpose.
  2. People and Culture: Aligns internal hiring, people development, and rewards.
  3. Processes and Systems: Embeds purpose into operational initiatives, accountability, and governance.
  4. Performance Metrics: Sets purpose-related measures, incentives, and goals.
  5. Public Engagement: Communicates purpose and aligns affilitations authentically outside the business to build trust.

The article also gives examples of how companies like PayPal, S&P Global, and Patagonia have successfully aligned their business strategies and operations with their purpose, leading to significant positive people, social, and business impacts.
