September 2023 marked the month I married my wife, Anna. We’ve been a couple for 6 years, and our friendship goes back over 10 years.
In the past, I’ve noticed that some people are surprised when they find out I’m in a relationship with a woman, probably because I don’t fit their stereotype of a lesbian. I’ve faced this challenge since I came out at 19.
I feel incredibly blessed to call Anna my wife. Same-sex marriage has been legal in this country for slightly over a decade, and attitudes towards the LGBTQIA+ community have only recently started shifting, but there is still much progress to be made.
There have been moments in my life where I didn’t feel comfortable being myself. Pride is crucial because we deserve to take pride in ourselves and our relationships. When I was young, positive representation was seriously lacking.
When I can openly and honestly be myself at work, it positively impacts my job performance and builds authenticity with my colleagues.
