The algorithm did what now?

Noticed a dip in your content reach? LinkedIn has made some changes to its algorithm - here's what has happened:

  1. Algorithm changes pre-June became noticeable
  2. The algorithm wants value first
  3. Your followers will see your content first
  4. What do these changes mean for you

1. Algorithm changes pre-June became noticeable

You'll notice more reach for posts which include:

  • Text only (shorter rather than longer too)
  • Video
  • Reposting but still not resharing

There's also been a shift in lower reach for:

  • Document/ pdf type posts
  • Reshared posts with or without your own thoughts added
  • Polls (am I the only one happy about this one?!)

And there is now no penalty for editing your post after it goes live. So any spelling mistakes or extra things you need to add in, go for it!

More on those changes ?

2. The algorithm wants value first

Any non-professional posts (the dog pictures you’ll see popping up) are no longer going to be rewarded in the same way.

LinkedIn isn’t Facebook like they say…

LinkedIn wants to highlight expert content on your feed that will be of the most relevance and interest to you.

More on those changes ?

3. Your followers will see your content first

Content is being pushed to followers first then to your connections.

Why? Because LinkedIn says that's what the users say they want.

The entrepreneur explains how to make use of that more here.

4. So what do these changes mean for you?

Lara Acosta put it best:

“Caring about algo changes is a losing battle for everyone. I like living by this one quote from Jason Vana: ‘create for your ideal customers - optimize for the algorithm’. No point worrying about something no one can control. Control your content, test new ideas, improve everyday and win.”

5. Removed features to know about

Statement from LinkedIn:

“Thanks to your invaluable feedback, we’ve learned that some of our creation tools aren’t facilitating your ability to share all of your amazing experiences and expertize with your community. This includes carousels, profile video, and the ability to embed clickable links within the image or video of your posts. So, starting June 26th, we’ll be removing these tools, though your current posts will still be viewable.”

Social Media Today

  1. Carousels - moving us back to pdf options
  2. Profile videos - I didn't see a huge uptake of these so more focus will go to our headlines/ about sections now
  3. Clickable links in images/ videos

Examples of each: Social Media Today

What's predicted to come in 2023?

  1. Monetisation for creators
  2. AI content
  3. Feature cleansing

That's all from me this month,

Darren

As a social media manager, I welcome that a simple selfie has less visibility than many well-thought text posts. I didn't come to LinkedIn for the selfies! ??
