Southern Algeria is home to some of the world’s most impressive landscapes, and a must for any desert enthusiast. South of the Mediterranean coastline, the land becomes more arid and desolate until it transforms into the Sahara. Thousands of square kilometers of dunes, mountains and rocks make up this breathtaking land. Covering around 800,000 square miles, Algeria’s share of the Sahara takes up over 80% of the country — the volcanic peaks, canyons and vast sand seas form a striking backdrop to oasis cities and unique North African cultures.

This trip explores the City of El-Oued southeast of Algeria. Has a huge variety of different scenery. Small Touareg communities following the traditions of their ancestors make their home here.?

The Sahara wasn’t always so arid, and the ancient city showing the communities and wildlife that once thrived here. This history lives on with the resilient of the local people, masters of the desert. I take opportunity to meet them when we can to learn about their unique lifestyle.

I am staying at the Gazelle D'Or situated just outside the city, it is a vast tourist complex in which luxury and beauty work together to offer a splendid setting for his guests. A collection of chic tents and whitewashed, domed buildings, this luxury resort surrounded by palm trees is about 7 km from the city center of El Oued. The colorful tents have all amenities. The elegant rooms feature a vaulted ceiling, decorative tiled floors, a seating area, a terrace and a TV. The villas also have a living room and a kitchenette.

You can Camp some nights amidst the dunes, watching the sun set over golden mountains and taking paths that few tread is a magical experience. The Sahara weaves a spell over all who visit….

In recent years, El-Oued has seen development in tourism, but it remains protected from mass tourism for the benefit of travelers. El-Oued is a fantastic city that offers all the landscapes one can wish to see in the Algerian Sahara.
