Alger at 60: Reflecting on Six Decades of Investment Success and Innovation
As Alger celebrates its 60th anniversary, we reflect on six decades of investment achievement and innovation. From our humble beginnings in downtown New York to becoming a pioneer in growth equity investing, we have continually embraced innovation and growth while remaining true to the principles that have guided our firm since its inception. Join us as we look back on the milestones that have shaped our journey and continue to fuel our vision for the future.
With just $3,000 and one employee, Fred Alger founded his eponymous firm in downtown New York, setting the stage for Alger to become a pioneer in actively managed, growth equity investing. It was during this time that he coined the term “Positive Dynamic Change” to describe companies that we identify as experiencing high unit volume growth or companies that are undergoing positive lifecycle changes. For six decades, we have remained steadfast in our philosophy of investing in growth. Explore Alger's timeline from 1964 to today.
Over the years, Alger has evolved into a dynamic firm, driven by a team of seasoned portfolio managers with deep expertise across a range of industries, including technology, health care, and life sciences. Strategic acquisitions, such as Weatherbie Capital, LLC in 2017 and more recently, Redwood Investments, LLC in early 2024, have further broadened Alger’s capabilities.
This is also a special year for our CEO and CIO Dan Chung as he celebrates his 30th work anniversary at Alger. Appointed CIO in 2001 and CEO in 2006, Dan began his Wall Street career by joining Alger’s analyst training program in 1994. Dan shares his thoughts on our firm’s unique hiring approach below.
