ALFRUS AND ITS ACTION PROGRAMME FOR 2030 AGENDA

The 2030 Agenda is globally recognized as the most ambitious attempt ever made to address the economic, social and environmental emergencies that threaten the future of the planet.

Adopted on 25 September 2015 by all 193 member countries of the United Nations, including Italy, the document outlines a targeted strategy that should lead to the resolution of issues going beyond national borders, by the end of 2030.

As part of an increasingly interconnected world, the United Nations urge a joint action by social and economic actors to reverse the course of the current global development system, winning this global challenge.

Alfrus responds with determination to this call.

ZERO HUNGER

The number of people suffering from hunger or malnutrition around the world is still extremely high.

Actions in the food and agricultural sector are crucial for the elimination of hunger and poverty.

An important aspect to provide secure access to nutritious food is to encourage a sustainable and resilient agricultural and food production system, aiming to protect the environment and promote biodiversity.

In this sense, Alfrus is commited with its Californian partner, Pomona Farming, to implementing a 100% sustainable farming model to ensure food integrity and safety through its almonds.

EQUAL WORKING OPPORTUNITIES

Our Code of Ethics identifies respect for individual dignity and gender differences as one of its fundamental principles.

Yet, unfortunately, in many work environments, discrimination against women still persists. Uprooting this phenomenon in an important public context like work is one of our missions at Alfrus.

Therefore, we are committed to valuing the work of our female colleagues and collaborators, ensuring equal work opportunities and career advancement for men and women, and encouraging female empowerment through greater inclusion of women in corporate decision-making processes.

CLEAN AND TREATED WATER

Almond processing requires a large amount of water.

For this purpose, we aim to improve our performance in water consumption.

Our facilities are equipped with advanced processing technologies focused on reducing our water consumption. Additionally, we have implemented a cutting-edge plant for the treatment and purification of wastewater that allows us to filter the water, which can be reused in local agricultural production.

This has enabled us today to reduce our water consumption impact by 15%.

Despite the excellent results achieved, we always aim to do better. Thanks to the collaboration with some prestigious university research centers, we are always looking for more efficient production processes in terms of water rationalization and wastewater purification by 2030.

Another aspect we focus on is reducing water pollution, especially from dangerous chemicals. The almond suppliers we rely on implement safe, efficient, and sustainable irrigation systems, reducing water consumption during agricultural operations and completely avoiding the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

RENEWABLE ENERGY AND SOURCES

Goal 7 of the 2030 Agenda urges the involved countries to achieve an energy transition through efficient, modern, and sustainable systems.

At Alfrus, we work daily to reduce energy consumption resulting from the almond processing. Our facilities are designed according to the logic of Smart Factory 4.0, with new technologies and state-of-the-art, low-energy consumption machinery.

Furthermore, last year we completed the construction of a 1 MW photovoltaic plant, rationalizing our energy consumption and activating authorization practices for the implementation of an additional 1 MW by 2025.

But there is more. The practice of reusing our by-products, such as the skins of processed almonds, allows us to generate a considerable amount of clean and sustainable energy. We have chosen to allocate the organic waste material from the almond peeling process to the production of biogas, transferring it to an external company.

By 2030, we at Alfrus aim to invest in Research and Development initiatives to grow and make our industrial process increasingly efficient, clean, and environmentally respectful through innovation and new technologies.

For social and economic development to occur in a sustainable way, our society must change its way of producing and consuming.

Our goal in this sense is to offer a sustainable almond by adopting an environmentally respectful approach at every production stage and promoting sustainability along the entire supply chain.

From the cultivation of almonds, which occurs through integrated and responsible agriculture, to the processing, we aim at improving production efficiency and reducing all kinds of waste.

Within our facilities, multiple actions have been launched to valorize by-products, with their consequent application in many sectors, including food, nutraceutical, and cosmetics.

CLIMATE ACTION

At every latitude, the world is experiencing the effects of climate change.

Greenhouse gas emissions, mainly linked to human activities, are considered the first cause of climate change.

Protecting the delicate balance of the planet and mitigating environmental risks is our precise duty. Therefore, we have adopted a sustainable strategy that allows us, year after year, to monitor and reduce the CO2 emissions of our plants, implementing initiatives of mitigation and adaptation to climate change.

Through these improvement practices, we manage to minimize the company's overall environmental footprint.

Biodiversity is an essential prerequisite for the development of humans, living beings and ecosystems worldwide.

At Alfrus, we are aware of our impact on biodiversity conservation and life on land.

Therefore, we aim for real and lasting change by supporting our suppliers in their regenerative farming practices, focused on responsible field management and biodiversity protection for the cultivated area, ensuring the future of the planet.
