Alexa & Siri

Happy Women’s day to Alexa & Siri,

*The only women who listen to Men*.

????????

This is the first thing I read early morning. Then saw many men & women laughing over it on WhatsApp. That was a common friends group.

I felt triggered. Had some irritation, then thought "it's a joke.. leave it at that".

Then got it again on a different women's group, where the first comment was ";-) good one.."!

I was more irritated & felt a little frustrated too this time! Didn't still know why.. & shrugged it off saying... "what's the point if women themselves make & take these kind of jokes!"

Then the last straw was closest.. in a Family Group... I instantly knew why I was feeling the discomfort the whole day!

As a child, I remember my uncles, dad n relatives passing on these kinda women generalization & demeaning jokes... that ultimately use to lead aunts, even mom cringing & shrugging off (just like I am doing since the whole day today!), I could read their embarrassed body language and sometimes aggressive too, but of course couldn't do anything then.

Today being a women's day, I am nudged to write this for every single one out there who is either making these kind of jokes, forwarding these, laughing on them or even shrugging it off. Are we really celebrating WOMEN with these jokes?

Let me start with the IMPACT OF THESE JOKES -

  • It largely hampers or challenges the self-esteem of the subject (in this case WOMEN) , not many people in the world know the art of not taking comments and generalizations personally.
  • If these kind of demeaning jokes are made in bulk and read in bulk, brain identifies it as a pattern and creates a GENERALIZATION in mind, which eventually we are dealing with at workplace today in the form of "Unconscious biases".
  • If your brain is strong enough, you genuinely respect women, and for you this is JUST A JOKE with no bad intention, then remember this joke will ultimately reach millions of people who are not that strong, they are still making out the meaning of life (youth and kids). So isn't it our responsibility to think through and only then forward anything?

Some common GENERALIZATIONS because of these jokes, that have already negatively impacted WOMEN in the CORPORATE and PERSONALLY throughout the world:

  1. Women are emotionally weak
  2. If a woman is frustrated or angry, it's because of PMS or hormones
  3. Women talk a lot, don't listen
  4. Women are not good at Logic or Maths
  5. Women love gossiping

Here's a quick request, if you've already reached here reading this article and not already SHRUGGED IT OFF, then are you ready to commit to yourself to TRULY LISTEN & ACT & not actually become SIRI & ALEXA going forward?

I promise not to shrug it off in future and make others aware about how it feels when they pass on these jokes? If you think it will make a difference, embrace this NEW HABIT to never shrug off a demeaning joke.

Thank you for this! Absolutely right and such jokes or forwards never amuses me. We needn’t put up with such remarks for sure ...

Agree. I did not like or forward those jokes though I received them. I agree with you that jokes subconsciously subjugate.

Bindu Bhatia U know I have been calling out stereotypical jokes and I just can't laugh at them somehow...no matter if the whole room is finding it funny.. have been called stiff, kill joy, boring, lacking in humor.. and told to lighten up. The very same line.."it's just a joke, yaar..." Thanks for the post.. I hope it reaches far and wide..

I am irritated by whole concept of women's day...I think women should be remembered and respected every day and not on a day decided by businesses to sell more
