Alcohol is the second biggest risk factor for cancer, according to a?study?published this week in the Lancet, boosted to this position by its high ranking among men.
Alcohol was responsible for 7·4%, of all lost disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in men in 2019, placing it a distant second after tobacco, which contributed 33·9%.
Alcohol was responsible for around half the percentage of DALYs lost to cancer for women, meaning it was down to seventh place. Unsafe sex and dietary risks taking second and third spots in the ranking.
Combining the high ranking among men with the lower ranking among women meant rose to being the second biggest contributor of lost DALYs (see chart). The ranking positions were largely unchanged since 2010.
Japan’s National Tax Agency is?reported?to be running a competition called “Viva Sake!”, to prop up tax revenue by encouraging more young people to drink alcohol.
Independent retailers on both sides of the Irish border confirmed their support for the introduction of minimum unit pricing for alcohol in Northern Ireland.

There are around 800,000 part-time and full time jobs connected with alcohol business in the UK and about?650.000 people who are alcohol dependent, meaning they experience side-effects when not inebriated.?
