A minority of Australian drinkers consumed the lion’s share of alcohol, as they do in most countries, found a new report from FARE Australia.
The top 5% of heaviest drinkers consume a third of alcohol, so contributing a large share of revenue to the alcohol industry. The pattern is similar everywhere.
In the UK harmful and hazardous drinkers provided around 70% of alcohol revenues, putting alcohol suppliers’ financial interests in direct conflict with health goals
“Greater controls are needed to ensure alcohol companies do not target people who are most at risk,“ FARE said releasing the report.
The WHO’s European office has invited feedback on its draft alcohol?framework.
