The Alchemy of Audience Participation

As a moderator, there is nothing more thrilling than engaging the panel and audience in a substantive, meaningful, and productive discussion. Participants bring energy and rich perspectives to the conversation. Additionally, having personally invested their point of view in an animated discussion, audience members leave with a deeper appreciation of the issues.
Last week, at NACD, I had the immense pleasure of moderating a brilliant panel featuring “The Not-So-White Paper.” Commissioned by E.L.F.Beauty, and conducted by Dean and Professor Elimelda Moige Ongeri, North Caroline Agricultural and Technical State University, this new study shows empirical data proving the financial strength of boardrooms that reflect the communities they serve. Together with Dr. Ongeri, panelists Mandy Fields, e.l.f. Beauty's CFO, and Kory Marchisotto, E.L.F.'s CMO, shared how and why E.L.F. is on a mission to #ChangeTheBoardGame. All three revealed the study and E.L.F.'s fresh and exciting vision of more diverse boards and their transformational value.
Importantly, the panel event followed an illuminating plenary session featuring Tarang Amin, E.L.F.'s visionary CEO. In an interview with NACD CEO Peter Gleason, Tarang Amin shared his perspective of the value of building a diverse board, as well as ELF’s bold campaign to #ChangeTheBoardGame. E.L.F. is the only US publicly traded company, out of 4,100, to have a board of directors that is 78% women and 44% diverse, representing the communities the company serves. Now, the company is on a mission to accelerate a broader transition – “More diverse people. On more boards.”
A few hundred corporate board directors joined us for the panel program that followed Tarang Amin's interview. With standing room only, we had a lively discussion between the panelists and participants. The room was electric! Animated conversations about the session continued in the hallways.
?Panelists and the audience left with new insights and ideas for a path forward.

Thank you so much for sharing, Alice Korngold. Our commitment to #ChangeTheBoardGame isn’t just about statistics; it’s about real change and representation. We're thrilled to see how these conversations continue to evolve at e.l.f. speed. Together, we can continue to drive change! ??
Well said. I love moderating. Most don’t understand the planning and intention put into a well-moderated session. It’s such a thrill when it all comes together in a great session.
