Alberta Selects Shell-Suncor-ATCO "Atlas Carbon Hub" Proposal
A proposal for an important carbon sequestration project being advanced by Shell Canada, ATCO and Suncor has been selected by the Alberta Government to progress to the next stage of development and evaluation.
The Atlas Carbon Sequestration Hub would service Alberta’s industrial heartland region, east of Edmonton, providing permanent subsurface carbon storage for industrial users, in an open access “hub” format.
“ATCO is continuing to play a key role in energy transformation in Alberta and beyond,” says Bob Myles, ATCO’s Executive Vice President of Corporate Development.?“The selection of the Atlas Hub is another concrete example of the significant steps ATCO is taking – alongside partners, government and customers – on a journey to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future for all.”
The Atlas Hub would be anchored by CO2 volumes from the proposed Shell Polaris carbon capture project and the ATCO-Suncor clean hydrogen project. In the case of the ATCO-Suncor project, which is expected to generate more than 300,000 tonnes per year of clean hydrogen, Atlas’ carbon sequestration capabilities would help ensure the capture of more than 95% of the carbon emissions generated in the hydrogen production process.
Carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) is an important technology key to helping Canada and Alberta meet their climate goals.?Around the globe, other jurisdictions are also developing CCUS hubs.
Alberta, with its deep energy expertise and even deeper saline aquifers and depleted oil fields, provides extensive options for safe underground CO2?storage. The Atlas Hub will leverage the lessons learned from Quest CCS, which was built and is operated by Shell. Quest has safely stored over 6 million tonnes of CO2 since it began operations in 2015.
