Alberta Revamps AAIP Worker Streams: What You Need to Know, Canada PR

Alberta is modifying its process for issuing Expressions of Interest (EOIs) to applicants in certain Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) pathways.

Effective today, September 30, individuals looking to apply under one of the AAIP worker streams must submit a Worker Expression of Interest (EOI).

To accomplish this, applicants will need to log into the AAIP portal and fill out an online form with their personal details. According to the province, those who submit a Worker EOI will be entered into a Worker Stream pool for potential selection. There is no application fee.

Candidates will be ranked according to the Worker EOI points system, which operates similarly to the federal Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).

For instance, they will receive points based on human capital factors such as their education (and whether their education was completed in Alberta), language proficiency, work experience (with additional points for work experience in Alberta), age, and having family ties in the province.

Candidates with higher scores are more likely to be chosen for provincial nomination. Invitations will be sent via email.

Alberta emphasizes that candidates cannot submit a Worker EOI if they "have an existing Worker EOI or Entrepreneur EOI, or a draft or active AAIP application. Existing applications or EOIs must be withdrawn before creating a new Worker EOI."

The province also notes that candidates should not rush to submit their application, as worker stream draws will not begin until mid to late October.

Alberta Worker Streams Earlier this year, Alberta revised the way it accepts applications for Worker streams to better manage high demand and align with labor market priorities.

In June, the province announced that it would only allow a limited number of applications into the pool at any given time. Once a target was met by the monthly deadline, no additional applications would be accepted.

This system was designed to balance processing times with the 9,750 PNP nominations that IRCC allocated to Alberta for 2024. The affected programs included:

  • Alberta Opportunity Stream
  • Rural Renewal Stream
  • Accelerated Tech Pathway
  • Tourism and Hospitality Stream

This strategy aimed to “provide applicants with multiple chances to apply and access the program throughout the year.”

In fact, demand for the Alberta Opportunity Stream was so high this year that the province had to temporarily stop accepting applications for this stream between February and June.

At that time, the province stated that the pause was necessary for the AAIP to “manage its current inventory and focus its limited immigration nominations on priority areas, such as filling labor shortages in healthcare, technology, construction, agriculture, tourism, hospitality, and other high-demand sectors.”
