Alaskan Leadership Lessons

Alaskan Leadership Lessons

As managing partner of Business Markers, I guide companies on a daily base, stimulate strategic thinking and build stronger leadership. But it isn't always in the boardroom where I discover profound lessons. This time, it was during my recent family adventure through the wilds of Alaska. Three lessons I learned and that reshaped my perspective on leadership.

1. Thorough Planning is Essential

Planning an Alaskan journey for a group isn't just about logistics; it's about aligning everyone's wishes, ambitions and passions. Each family member took charge of different parts of the trip: from planning activities to navigating trails. This collaborative approach made everyone feel involved in our adventure.

Leadership Lesson: Involving your team in planning and decision-making fosters a sense of ownership and commitment. By matching responsibilities with individual interests, you create a more engaged and effective team.

2. Passion and Ambition as drivers of discipline

In business, strategy execution is only possible through discipline. Our journey through Alaska wasn't governed by strict rules however, though by a shared passion for exploration and discovery. The cohesion and understanding within our group made rigid discipline unnecessary. Our common enthusiasm for this adventure kept us unified. Open communication enabled a spontaneous kind of discipline.

Leadership Lesson: Fostering a shared ambition and passion among your team can eliminate the need for micromanagement. When everyone is driven by the same goals, they naturally align their efforts, leading to a more collaborative and self-motivated team.

3. The Reward of Going 100% Offline

One of the most rewarding aspects of our trip was going completely offline: no network, no shops, no utilities... Without digital distractions, we immersed ourselves fully in the experience and forged deeper connections with each other and our surroundings. Without utilities, we were way more conscious about the use of resources. This detox revitalized our minds and spirits.

Leadership Lesson: Encourage your team to take breaks from digital devices to focus on creativity and interactions. Going offline can boost productivity, mental health and team cohesion.

Conclusion

As we navigate the complexities of the business world, let's draw inspiration from the wild, uncharted beauty of Alaska. My Alaskan adventure taught me that thorough planning, leveraging shared passions and embracing the benefits of going offline are not just survival strategies: they are essential leadership qualities.
