The Alarming Rise of Workplace Suicides: A Call to Action for Employers and Employees in India

The recent surge in employee suicides due to work pressure is a deeply concerning trend that demands immediate attention. In India, where societal and familial expectations often multiply workplace stress, the situation is particularly critical. This newsletter delves into the issue, outlining proactive steps both employers and employees can take to foster a mentally healthier work environment and prevent such tragedies.

The Problem:

Intense Work Culture: For many companies India's rapidly growing economy often fosters a culture of long hours, unrealistic targets, and constant pressure to perform, leading to chronic stress and burnout.

Stigma Around Mental Health: Societal stigma prevents many employees from seeking help for mental health issues, leading to a bottling up of emotions and a sense of isolation. Employees under stress may fail to share his/her issue with near and dear ones or co-workers thinking what will other think about him/her - a loser not able to manage the challenges of life? Will the employee stand exposed on his/her inadequacy to deal with the daily challenges that his/her work environment brings to him/her each day?

Lack of Support Systems: Many workplaces lack adequate support systems and resources for employees struggling with mental health challenges. Every workplace does not have the mechanisms and support systems like a helpline for employees that where they can reach out to having the confidence that their call will be handled with absolute secrecy and confidence?

What Employers Can Do:

Promote Work-Life Balance: Encourage a healthy work-life balance by discouraging excessive overtime, promoting flexible work arrangements, and providing ample vacation time. Few organizations are making a conscious effort to promote the well being of their all stakeholders. One notable example would be Chitkara University, India they have a dedicated Chief Happiness Officer and there are programs being held on regular basis to promote the well being ( Mental health - Happiness programs/ Meditation sessions, Well being workshops , Physical health (Yoga workshops, Meditation sessions etc) for all the stakeholders Students/Employees etc. in the Chitkara University Ecosystem/Family). This all starts from leadership and hence it is important to note that the Top Leadership of any organization plays a very vital role in terms of creating and nurturing the work culture of their organization.

Cultivate a Supportive Culture: Foster an open and inclusive environment where employees feel comfortable discussing mental health concerns without fear of judgment or repercussions. Having the culture of open and honest communication is vital to ensure that employee issues are being addressed at the start before it becomes a major problem- less difficult to address later where the damage has been done already.

Provide Mental Health Resources: Offer access to mental health professionals, employee assistance programs (EAPs), and stress management workshops. Time to time organizations should offer employees with workshops that provides them the tools and techniques to overcome and mental health issue in the start itself.

Train Managers: Equip the managers/leaders with the skills to identify signs of stress and mental health issues in their team members and provide appropriate support. The workshops that train managers to have heightened sensitivity to their team members will go a long way to build an organization that provides a conducive work environment to all.

Lead by Example: Senior leaders should prioritize their own mental well-being and set a positive example for the rest of the organization. It all starts from the top level, in case the leaders are taking care of their well-being the others will follow the footsteps of their leaders.

What Employees Can Do:

Prioritize Self-Care: Make time for activities that promote mental and physical well-being, such as exercise, meditation, and spending time with loved ones. Learn to prioritize tasks effectively. Learn tips to be efficient so that task can be completed within timelines.

Seek Support: Don't hesitate to reach out to friends, family, or mental health professionals if you're struggling. Take support of your co-workers when you need and give it back to them when they need your support. This is a two-way process. Take help and also be ready to help.

Open Communication - Have an open communication channel with your friends, colleagues, managers etc.

Know Your Rights: Familiarize yourself with your company's policies on mental health and employee well-being.

Specific Considerations for India:

Address Cultural Nuances: Employers in India should be particularly mindful of cultural sensitivities surrounding mental health and tailor their programs accordingly.

Leverage Technology: Utilize technology platforms to provide accessible and convenient mental health resources to employees across different locations.

Collaborate with NGOs: Partner with mental health NGOs to offer specialized support and resources to employees.

Conclusion:

It's time to break the silence surrounding mental health in the workplace. By working together, employers and employees can create a culture of support and understanding, ensuring that everyone feels safe and empowered to prioritize their well-being. Let's commit to building workplaces where employees thrive, not just survive.
