Alarming Increase in Maternal Mortality Rates and Racial Disparities Highlighted in CDC Report

In a recently released report, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that the maternal mortality rate in the United States is continuing to increase, with Black women experiencing a widening racial disparity. The report indicated that 1,205 deaths from pregnancy-related issues were reported in 2021, reflecting an increase of 38% since 2020. While maternal mortality rates increased for all racial groups, Black women are 2.6 times more likely to die than white women.

The report also emphasizes the significant crossroads we are facing as a country in protecting our pregnant women and the racial disparities that continue to persist across maternal health measures.?While we celebrate Congress’ effort to ensure states have the option to extend Medicaid postpartum coverage from two months to twelve months, we recognize this is a critical first step to ensure all women can access necessary care within one year of giving birth. We applaud state leaders that have taken steps to extend coverage options and encourage states currently considering the option to take the leap to address the disproportionate rate of Black mothers dying.?

One important step states can take is to join a growing number of elected leaders and state Medicaid programs in recognizing that CenteringPregnancy results in healthier pregnancies, improved birth outcomes, closes the disparity gap, and provides a better overall experience for women and birthing people and healthcare providers.

Centering Healthcare Institute (CHI) commends five states – Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, South Carolina, and Texas – Medicaid programs that participate in alternative payment strategies that include enhanced reimbursement for CenteringPregnancy. Additionally, CHI is supporting efforts in Michigan and North Carolina to ensure CenteringPregnancy is recognized through various policy strategies.?

We can improve equity, access, and prevent poor maternal health outcomes in many ways for all moms and call on you to help us take action.?
