Mobile | Baldwin Carnival & Mardi Gras
Although the Big Easy is best-known for its Mardi Gras revelry, the Port City of Alabama - Mobile, which was founded in 1702 by French settlers, lays claim to the first Mari Gras in the new world. And, if you think Mardi Gras began in?New Orleans, you’re clearly not from?Alabama!
Apparently, as early as 1703, French settlers were holding some type of Mardi Gras celebration in Mobile and adapting the ancient European tradition to their new world environment and New Orleans wasn’t founded until 1718. Therefore, strictly speaking, Mobile had the earliest celebration of the two cities.
Other evidence reveals Mardi Gras was already common the Port City by the 1730s, although the first recorded Mardi Gras parade didn’t float through the New Orleans streets until 1857. Meanwhile, over here in Mobile - Boeuf Gras, a mystic society kicked off its first documented parade in 1711 down Dauphin Street with a giant bull’s head on wheels, which was used in ancient Carnival celebrations in France.
Be sure to include Alabama in your celebration of Fat Tuesday?in style.?Mobile?throws the second-largest Mardi Gras celebration in the country, and is the oldest in the New World.
