ALA supports Justice Defenders through action learning sets

For more than 20 years we have been supporting chief executives and senior leaders in an action learning set that meet, in person, for whole days 4 times a year. It offers a safe place for leaders to share their thinking and create the vision for how their organisations might develop. We are proud to have given such a space to Alexander McLean when he was creating the African Prisons Project,?now Justice Defenders. His idea of offering law degrees to prisoners, often on death row, and to prison officers in Africa seemed visionary but far-fetched.

The questions set members asked him in the action learning set helped him flesh out what would be needed for that growth. He worked on the big questions around funding and staffing and went away with practical plans. He turned the vision into reality, and Justice Defenders has grown far beyond those initial dreams, celebrating 67 prisoners and prison officers who have graduated from prison with University of London law degrees. These graduates are now serving their communities with the skills and knowledge they’ve acquired.

Justice Defenders is a registered US non profit and UK charity working across Kenya and Uganda. They are a community of prisoners, prison officers, lawyers, judges, and allies. Unlikely companions, working together for justice. Find out more and support their work here.
