Al Khandaq Cultural Heritage in a glance. By Fatima M. Osman

Ever wondered what to celebrate on the International Day of Intangible Cultural Heritage during a time of global conflict? In such turmoil, it can be hard to find moments of hope and inspiration. Still, in these moments, stories of resilience and dedication to cultural preservation become vital.

I found myself reflecting on this when I came across the remarkable story of Ms. Fatima M. Osman and the people of Al-Khandaq, a small community in Sudan. Thanks to the incredible efforts of ? Professor Intisar Soghayroun, their unwavering commitment to preserving their cultural heritage, even in the face of ongoing war, has come to light.

Fatima’s relentless work to document and safeguard the traditions, stories, and crafts of Al-Khandaq amidst conflict is a testament to the power of the human spirit. She has shown us that, even in the darkest times, the beauty of our intangible cultural heritage can shine through. Her actions are not just about preservation; they are about ensuring the survival of a community’s identity, its sense of self, and its connection to the past.

As Professor Intisar stated in her dedication to Fatima and the people of Al-Khandaq:-

"Your collective strength, solidarity, and dedication to preserving the living heritage of the region in the midst of great hardship is truly inspiring. By conducting interviews, meeting with displaced people, and witnessing how the heritage of the village continues to evolve, you have ensured that these intangible treasures are not lost but passed on."

The story of Al-Khandaq is a beacon of hope, reminding us that cultural heritage is more than just relics of the past. It is alive, breathing, and shaped by the experiences, crafts, and stories of communities like this one, who continue to adapt and thrive even under the weight of conflict.

Today, let us celebrate not only the bravery of Fatima and the people of Al-Khandaq but also the profound importance of preserving our intangible cultural heritage for future generations. These efforts show us that, even when faced with great adversity, cultural heritage endures, and with it, the spirit of the communities that protect it.
