Australia Conducts North Korea Nuclear Activity Air Surveillance
According to the Australian Department of Defence media release on 16 September, the Australian Defence Force (ADF) has?conducted?air surveillance over North Korea to monitor illegal nuclear weapons development. Two Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) P-8A Poseidon aircraft were deployed from Kadena Air Base in Japan as part of Operation Argos to enforce UN Security Council (UNSC) sanctions on the totalitarian state.
This marks the 12th RAAF air patrol to monitor trade in the region. To date, 23 of its 29 resolutions regarding Pyongyang relate to nuclear non-proliferation, with the goal of limiting the country’s trade industries and future nuclear and missile tests.?Australia has expanded its own sanctions on North Korea in the past, essentially prohibiting commercial activities with the state since 2017.
The Republic of Korea (RoK) is Australia’s 4th largest trading partner – and officials of RoK often seem surprised that their detailed knowledge of our country and its history is rarely reciprocated.? This lack of awareness also crosses into the security domain with Australian planners and writers mentioning Korea only in passing, if at all – as was the case for the recent Defence Strategic Review.
However, this seeming uninterest in the RoK was at least partially offset by a powerful speech given by Defence Minister Richard Marles at the Korean National Day celebrations in Canberra on September 14.?The Minister’s thoughtful speech could mark an important point in further boosting cooperation between Australia and the RoK.
SK bioscience inks deal with Australian firm to develop patch-type typhoid vaccine
SK bioscience said Thursday 28th September it has reached a deal with Vaxxas, an Australian biotechnology company, to jointly develop a new patch-type typhoid vaccine. The global charitable foundation Wellcome will fund the collaboration for the first two years, awarding $3.67 million to conduct the first-phase clinical trial, according to SK bioscience.?
Under the agreement, SK bioscience will supply the antigen utilized by its typhoid conjugate vaccine SKYTyphoid to Vaxxas, which will develop a new type of vaccine-delivery device using its high-density microarray patch (HD-MAP) platform technology based on the SKYTyphoid antigen.
