How did Juraj become homeless?
Juraj was born in 1955, graduated from high school, speaks English and German, has not been married and has no children.
He went through several jobs, last he worked at the customs office in Bratislava. He had an apartment on the Závadska street in Raca until he lost his job. At that time, he resigned the apartment on his brother and he continued to pay the rent for him. After a couple of months, his brother said he could not pay rents for two apartments and that needs to sell the one. The one Juraj was living in. That's what happened in 2009. Since then, he has been spending time in the abandoned house on 8th street under the Kamzik.
His life on the street began by selling the Nota Bene magazine and later a gained retirement of 230 euros. He is not able to find a job at the moment, so he lives out of charity. People from the Holy Egidiy community give him sandwiches or bread once a week. People who know Juraj as well as tourists occasionally give him money or gastro tickets or some food or coffee. You will never see Juraj on his knees in a deep bow with the cap in front of him as other homeless people do, who spend their time in the center of Bratislava. His area is on the Rudnay's Square and its surroundings. Juraj does not smoke nor drinks alcohol, but you will definitely see a book in his hands. He is a lot into music, even the classical one. More than donated money, he values good word that people share with him. Juraj has become a symbol of pride and decency in this difficult situation. When I was saying goodbye the last time we met, he had tears in his eyes and a joy from the hope that I will stop again and talk to him.
