What I find really special about the Geniusee team is that whenever we have an urgent problem like on Friday when we noticed that you can't even add one user in the app with the cheap device, you are ready to help with a bug fix even Friday evening. Or ready to watch over the website Monday evening during our "H?hle der L?wen"- pitch. This is sooo incredibly helpful!”

Julian Meyer-Arnek CTO Ajuma?

About

Award-winning technology that helps you to find the right amount of sun. The Ajuma company was founded by a couple after the birth of their child. They wanted to protect their baby from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation sunburn and from potentially generated skin cancer in adulthood. That’s how they got the idea for the UV-Bodyguard, a smart UV-Assistant that warns on time before it’s too late.

The challenge

When Ajuma approached Geniusee, they were in the process of making decisions about creating one app on NativeScript or 2 native apps for IOS and Android. Having made a fundamental analysis, our team of specialists came to the conclusion that in this case, writing 2 applications would be more appropriate. This is how our story of developing an application from scratch for measuring UV radiation began.

Key challenges of the project included:

  • Develop an app – including UI/UX – for iOS and Android that guides the user according to the current recommendations with respect to UV exposure
  • Integration with a smart device (the UV-Bodyguard wearable)
  • Protect users from sunburns

The process

The process started with team onboarding to the project done by the Business Analyst and Account Manager. Then, the team and the Client participated in a kick-off meeting which laid the foundation for the first sprint planning and helped us start building the MVP. We used Swift for IOS App and Kortlin for Android App to make a functional proof of concept that can be quickly passed to testers. The team uses Slack, Jira, and works in weekly sprints. Every day we organize meetups & standups to discuss features, prioritize the backlog, and simply hang out.

Core activities at this stage include:

  • Development with Swift and Kotlin mobile apps in 6 months
  • Building a user-friendly, intuitive mobile interface and making it responsive on tablets
  • Discussing documentation, communicating on Slack, and having daily internal stand-ups

Geniusee released 2 mobile apps for Android and IOS in 2020. So far, Ajumna has sold over 12 000 smart devices in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. With a stable version built in Swift and Kotlin, the app is now easy to maintain and augment with new features. It’s also much easier for new developers to jump quickly into the project. Since we began our collaboration, Ajuma has raised new fundings from European startup accelerators such as the Business Incubation Programme from the European Space Agency (ESA) and from private investors.

The success of this project hinged on the following factors:

  • A client who clearly knows what they want to have in their application
  • Validating ideas and cooperating closely with the client, combined with the impressive performance delivered by a highly functional team
  • Creating well-written documentation and improving testing processes

“Geniusee provided an app and helped establish our backend and website solution that put Ajuma into a position to “go for the market” in Germany and neighboring countries in spring 2021. The launch of the product took part as part of the German TV show “H?hle der L?wen” (equivalent to “Shark Tank”) and was therefore causing an immense echo with ~100.000 unique visitors of the website,” – says Julian Meyer-Arnek.
