At a time when technology is not just evolving but soaring into the future, I had the privilege of attending the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2024. Not only did I see thousands of professionals gathering to discuss and celebrate the future of connectivity, I also engaged, one on one, with several experts in various fields. My discussions focused on the intricacies of AI at the Edge, the transformational potential of AI for Virtualized RAN (VRAN), and the critical influence of 5G Core Networks on energy efficiency.
As a result of my conversations as an Intel Ambassador attending MWC Barcelona 2024, I was able to uncover a vivid picture of the present and illuminate the path to a technologically advanced future, as I pieced together how these advances are impacting business and our lives right now.
AI at the Edge: Transforming Industries through Automation and Innovation
In my discussions about edge computing, we focused on the explosion of data generation at the network's edge. This trend is revolutionizing how businesses operate, enabling AI-driven automation and innovation across various sectors. The deployment of AI technologies at the edge is pivotal, with use cases ranging from factory automation to self-checkout systems, showcasing the technology's potential to enhance efficiency and drive growth.
The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of these technologies, transforming them from luxuries to necessities. The integration of AI at the edge is expected to continue its growth trajectory, particularly benefiting industries like manufacturing – with a greater influx of automation, and retail – with advances in self-checkout and inventory control. In these and other cases, we’ll see improved process automation and cost reduction.
AI for VRAN: Revolutionizing Telecom with Efficiency and Innovation
My conversations on the application of AI in VRAN revealed how this technology is set to transform the telecom sector. AI's integration into VRAN is enhancing energy efficiency, optimizing network performance, and creating new revenue opportunities. Through detailed use cases with major telecom operators like AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, and Vodafone, experts illustrated AI's capability to dynamically adjust network operations, such as CPU frequencies and beam management, to improve energy savings, user experience, and service quality.

These operational and customer experience improvements signify a major leap forward, setting new standards for telecom operations and paving the way for a future characterized by smarter, more efficient, and customer-centric networks.
5G Core Networks and Energy Saving: Pioneering Sustainable Telecom Operations
Additional dialogue into the sustainability efforts within the telecom industry shed light on the critical issue of energy savings in 5G core networks. Because CPU energy consumption by telecoms ranges between 20% and 40%, it’s important for service providers to optimize power utilization. The introduction of Infrastructure Power Manager software marks a significant advancement in managing server power consumption, demonstrating the industry's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. This innovative power management solution, which has shown to achieve up to 40% energy savings in collaboration with companies like Nokia, highlights the dual benefits of sustainability and cost efficiency.
The telecom industry's focus on designing power-efficient products and the operational efficiency gained from real-time power usage optimization underscore a broader shift towards more sustainable and intelligent network operations.
Shaping the Future
The insights from my discussions at the Mobile World Congress 2024, combined with the latest developments from companies like Intel, highlight the transformative potential of AI at the Edge, AI for VRAN, and 5G Core Networks in driving technological innovation and environmental responsibility. These advancements are not only enhancing operational efficiency and customer experience but are also crucial in addressing the urgent need for sustainability in the digital age. As these technologies continue to evolve, their integration into various sectors promises to reshape industries, offering new opportunities for growth and innovation while paving the way for a more sustainable and technologically advanced future.
