Airline Pilot Interview Preparation

Some interview questions can demonstrate the pilots' hard skills, behavioural intelligence, and soft skills. But what can you expect when undertaking an interview with an airline?

First, understand the three main topics that come up in airline pilot interviews. In general, the standard attributes and competences to look for in an Airline Pilot include:

  • Exceptional dexterity competences and the capability to stay calm and make quickly intelligent decisions while up in the air
  • Wide technical knowledge of the aircraft, as well as the proficiency to execute frequent safety checks to test the plane’s condition
  • Great leadership, teamwork, and communication skills

1. Hard Skills

The recruiters want to hear about the pilot technical knowledge and abilities.

2. Soft Skills

The pilot personal characteristics and mental skills.

3. Behavioural intellect

This questions establish how a candidate handled certain situations in the past.


There can also be placed some questions about operations or specific situations such as conflict resolution.

Next, there are specific questions. Here are some so you can practice your answers!

  • How many flight hours do you have?

  • How far should you fly from a thunderstorm for safety?
  • What have you done to improve your piloting skills in the last year?
  • What was the hardest decision you had to make as an airline pilot?
  • What would your leadership style as a captain be?
  • How do you deal with stressful situations?
  • What would you do if a problem occurred with one of the plane's engines?
  • How do you resolve difficulties in communication?
  • How do you ensure your cabin crew is motivated, enthusiastic, and focused before and during the flight?
  • What is the minimum vertical separation between two aircraft?
  • Why did you want to become a pilot?
  • Why are checklists and SOPs important for pilots?
  • What distinguishes you from other pilots applying for this position?
  • How much flying experience do you have?
  • What is one quality/personality trait, given the chance, you would change about yourself?
  • What would you do if you were feeling fatigued before a scheduled flight?
  • How can you conserve fuel while in the air?
  • What is your preferred aircraft and why?
  • What do you believe are the most important qualities for a pilot?


Remember, this interviews purpose is to evaluate your qualifications for the pilot role position. You should answer in a clear and confident manner.
