??Airbus has officially inaugurated its centre for the development of innovative wing technologies in the UK, taking a step ahead of Boeing in the race for the wing of tomorrow.
??The American aircraft manufacturer is banking on an XXL wing project to equip single-aisle aircraft. These wings would deliver impressive fuel savings, but would require a folding mechanism, in order to fit in existing airport gates for single-aisle jets.
??Airbus' current projects are based on composite materials and have the advantage of being less constraining than Boeing's, since only the wingtips would be equipped with folding mechanisms. According to Airbus, "making wings longer, leaner, and lighter is one of the biggest opportunities to improve fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions".
??The next generation of wings should take less time to build, which will actually cost less to the manufacturer. Airbus is expected to firstly re-wing one of its existing aircraft, such as a longer version of the Airbus A220.
