To Air Quote Or Not, That Is The Question

To Air Quote Or Not, That Is The Question

One of the most entertaining aspects to observe when someone speaks is their gestures. It’s almost like watching a silent film where the director forgot to give the actors a script. In fact, many people have their go-to gestures they rely on to underscore key concepts, whether consciously or not. Who doesn’t love a good air quote when discussing “innovative strategies,” right???

?

Let’s dive into a few situations and their universal gestures. Think about how and when you’ve seen these in real life.??

  • In many cultures (but not all), nodding suggests agreement, while shaking your head indicates disagreement. But beware—if you find yourself in a country where nodding means “no,” you could wind up unintentionally offending someone while trying to express your enthusiasm for their cooking. “This dish is amazing!” nod nod Wait, did I just vote against it? Oops.??

?

  • Another classic is crossing your arms. While it can signal disapproval or disinterest, it can also mean, “I’m so cold I might just turn into a human popsicle!” If it’s winter and you see someone wrapped up like a burrito, chances are they’re not judging you; they’re just trying to retain some body heat.??

?

  • Holding one’s chin is a gesture synonymous with deep thought. You know, like when you’re pretending to be seriously evaluating a menu while really just deciding between dessert options. This gesture is immortalized in Auguste Rodin’s statue, Le Penseur, aka “the thinker”—who, let’s be honest, probably just got overwhelmed by all those choices too. For guys, stroking a beard signifies deep contemplation, or it could simply mean they’re trying to figure out if it’s time for a trim.??

?

  • And then there’s the classic “prayer” gesture, where one places their hands together as if in prayer or begging the universe to help them remember where they left their keys. This can convey several ideas like “thank you,” “you have my attention,” or “I really hope I don’t forget my lines!”??

?

Gestures can be fantastic tools for conveying energy levels and directing focus. But the real trick is ensuring your gestures align with your message and intention – because no one wants to send the wrong signal when talking to their boss or an important client.?
