Air Freight Market Update December 17, 2024.
Air freight rates edged up a little further last week, according to the latest data from TAC Index, the leading price reporting agency for air freight markets. The global Baltic Air Freight Index (BAI00) calculated by TAC was up another +0.8% in the week to 16 December, leaving it ahead by +0.5% from where it was at this time last year, when there was a pronounced peak season spike. The data thus far matches expectations of a strong peak season this year, despite a rise in capacity and a lot of planning ahead this year by shippers and freight forwarders.
Rates from China were slightly higher again – led by rising spot rates to the US, sources said – with the boom in e-commerce, which has been a dominant theme all year, continuing. The index of outbound routes from Hong Kong (BAI30) edged up a further +1.0% WoW, though leaving it still a little lower by -4.0% YoY from last year’s very high peak levels. Outbound Shanghai (BAI80) slipped -1.0% WoW, but is still slightly ahead of last year at +0.7% YoY. Elsewhere out of Asia, price patterns were mixed, with rates from Vietnam and India rising to the US but a little lower to Europe. While rates to Europe from Bangkok and from Seoul were both a little higher.
Out of Europe, rates were generally higher again overall, including on lanes to China if not to Japan. The index of outbound routes from Frankfurt (BAI20) added to recent big gains with a further rise of +1.8% WoW, leaving it ahead by +19.1% YoY. Outbound London Heathrow (BAI40) surged +12.9% WoW, led by higher rates to the US, leaving it ahead by an even more impressive looking +24.3% YoY.
From the Americas, the index of outbound routes from Chicago? (BAI50) slipped a little after last week’s big rise, falling -2.0% WoW to leave it at -14.1% YoY. Overall rates from the Americas were also mixed, with small gains to China but falls to Europe. Rates to South America were rising overall, but a little lower WoW from Miami – though still comfortably ahead YoY.
