Precision motion & automation solutions for photonics, semiconductor, bio-medical, 3D printing, laser/optics engineering
A new generation of miniaturized air bearing stages along with advanced alignment algorithms introduced powers a novel, compact multi-axis fiber alignment system. Based on friction-free air bearings, linear motors and a high-performance motion controller and software, the system enables fast and precise automated alignment of fibers, waveguides and other optical components. This multi-axis nanopositioning stage offers continuous and smooth motion, with its closed-loop motion controller providing nanometer resolution and long-term stability, making it an excellent fit for coupling optical signals into modern silicon photonics devices etc.
Unlike conventional ball bearings or crossed-roller bearings, the air bearings employed in the compact multi-axis alignment system have no wearing parts and require no lubrication. Additionally, air bearings produce no particles, making them ideal for clean-room environments. The air bearing/linear motor approach offers an almost infinite lifespan, ensuring a 24/7 operation.
While precision motion mechanics such as the F-142 alignment system are essential for achieving high throughput and quality results in modern fiber and silicon photonics alignment processes, the control software and firmware-based alignment algorithms are equally important. Faster and more effective alignments lead to better alignment quality and higher throughput, resulting in more efficient production and testing.
The video shows the excellent dynamic performance, with long distance XYZ moves, followed by a large area spiral scan and align routine.
6-Axis Alignment Systems
Photonics alignment applications that require a 6-DOF motion system, 6-axis air bearing alignment engine can be used. Additional 6-axis and 12-axis alignment systems systems based on hexapod parallel kinematics and ultra-fast piezo scanners are also available.
